attack of the killer tomatoes

So, remember back at the end of April, I posted some pictures of cute little baby plants? My way of saying “Look, I planted a garden!” but still being all subtle about it, just in case things went terribly wrong…

Well, it’s 6 weeks later, and the joke is on me. My pictures then were all up close and personal of those plants, and you could think I was just being artsy. But here’s the truth: I was afraid to show you this picture:

And not just because the soccer goal is in the background and the ghetto fencing is not attached to the box at all, or that I forgot to move the box of staples out of the frame – no, all of those are great reasons to keep this picture off the internet, but the thing that truly stopped me is that I knew that anyone who knew anything about gardening would shriek in dismay over how many plants I had in that little bed. I mean seriously, there are at least 20 tomato plants alone.

But – I had them all and I couldn’t bear to not plant them all. I told myself everything would be okay.

And now, when I walk out into my backyard, this is what greets me:

It’s utter chaos out there. The zucchini are knocking over the eggplant, there are a couple of pepper and okra plants that I can’t even find anymore, and a rogue squash is growing out in the middle of my lawn.  It’s definitely survival of the fittest, and I’m not sure any of it can get enough sun to actually get anything done.

But you have to admire how hard it’s all trying.

And finally, because I couldn’t stand it any longer, I picked my first produce today.

We’ll see who wins the next round…
