giving them the boot

Packing for a trip with 3 kids has always been one of those areas of motherhood that seems just a bit beyond my skill level. We load our car full of every imaginable item and then turn up at our destination to find that one kid’s only pair of underwear is the one they are currently wearing. I can be prepared for every possible medical emergency but forget to pack a single thing to float on at the beach. Et cetera.

So last year we somehow got to Lampasas before we realized that Jonathan only brought one pair of shoes, which were his flip-flops. In November. Which for me as a mother brings on equal parts mortification and well I guess if his feet get cold enough he’ll learn his lesson indignation.

For a grandmother, however, it means a trip to the boot store. And somehow, even though Jonathan was the only one in a certifiable state of need for shoes, all three Jones boys came home with a pair.

And I immediately took these pictures for my friend David Harvey, whose stories of appropriate dress and footwear for boy scout camps have made me laugh for years. “Boots and shorts, Sarabeth, it’s a classic. Never underestimate the genius of boots and shorts.”

Also worthy to note: Even though my husband is 6 foot 6, he likes to wear these fancy 3-inch heels from Lampasas “when he wants to feel tall.”

At least he’s still able to wear his. The other two pairs have been worn through and outgrown, already. The first of many such pairs, I expect. And maybe if they’re lucky, these two will get Mr. David to give them fashion advice while their daddy teaches them how to walk in heels…

I’ll be too busy finding the innertubes and underwear.

  1. I was scrolling down and saw the photos and knew I had to send congratulations…  Seriously good looking boots!  Those 3″ jobs are called riding heels and they are made that way so you foot doesn’t slip off the stirrup while riding but does slip out if you fall off the horse.

I grew up with “The Western Store” a half mile away and “The North Forty” (feed and tack) the same distance in the opposite direction.  The smell of a western/tack store is positively intoxicating.  Good grief, I think I am getting a little giddy.  As soon as I get home I’m breaking out the Justin Elephants.  God Bless Texas!

It is also worth noting that horse feed and granola ceral are alarmingly similar, they have almost exactly similar ingredients.  One just comes in a bigger bag.
