Fair warning: the events in this post concern last year’s spring break, not this year’s. That’s right, 10 months ago. We are nothing if not timely around here. Also? There will be many pictures. Get that scrolling finger ready.
It’s all for posterity, people. If I don’t record this somewhere, it’s like it never happened. And you wouldn’t my kids to forget about Booger Hollow, would you?
Ok, so Booger Hollow wasn’t our actual destination, just a stop on the way to Ponca, Arkansas, home of the Buffalo Outdoor Center (BOC!) where we spent the last few days of our spring break. We are pretty familiar with this stretch of highway – because of the many trips to Castle Bluff. However, those trips usually involve 15-passenger vans full of middle or high school students, and are not necessarily best for impulsive stops on the side of the highway.
But this was not one of those trips. Truly, one of my favorite things about my husband is that as quickly as I can notice a beautiful wreck of a building he is pulling off the road. This? This was that kind of trip.
Definitely cool and creepy all at once. There’s a tree growing right through the porch!
Onward we went to Ponca. Gorgeous drive, gorgeous part of the state. We pulled in to the BOC to check in.
I might be able to show you what it looked like, if only I hadn’t been so captivated by all their colorful canoes stacked outside.

We decided, since it was beautiful and clear, to get in a hike before the sun went down. So we headed to Hawksbill Crag (also known as Whitaker Point) and hiked about a mile and a half out to one of the most photographed spots in Arkansas.

When you are hiking, it’s important to have the proper accessories. Like hiking sticks. And lime green cowboy hats.
We walked, and looked, and took pictures. I forget – that’s what’s so great about a hike. You have time to notice.

Little signs of spring everywhere.
These kids aren’t too bad looking either.
Finally, the view began to open up into a massive valley.
About this point, my kids realized that was the crag up on the left and took off. You can see it coming for a while; the trail plays peek-a-boo with the view.
And then one of your people makes it out there and gives you an idea how big the thing really is.

All in all, a great way to end the day.
This is my kids saying this is the last picture mom. Really.
And it is. For today, anyway…
I love your photos. So very much. And your family is adorable.
I LOVE these catch up posts!!
And little signs of spring are making me super happy on this January day!! :)
I just love these photos and makes me want to take this hike even sooner. It’s on my bucket list.
Crap, Booger Hollow is no more? I went there when it was open, many, many years ago.
